Eyelid deformities occur when the eyelids either turn inward (entropion) or turn outward (ectropion), both of which can affect eye health and appearance.
Outward Turning of the Eyelid / Ectropion
Ectropion is a condition where the eyelid turns outward, exposing the inner conjunctiva. Because the tear drainage openings (puncta) are also turned outward (everted), patients experience tear drainage issues. In severe cases, this leads to excessive tearing (epiphora), causing tears to run down the face. In milder cases, it creates a constantly watery or teary-eyed appearance.
To relieve symptoms and improve the cosmetic appearance, corrective surgical procedures (split techniques) are performed. In some cases, skin or cartilage grafts may be necessary, particularly in cases involving skin damage or burns. These procedures help restore both tear drainage function and the patient’s overall appearance.
Inward Turning of the Eyelid / Entropion
Entropion occurs when the eyelid margin turns inward, causing eyelashes to rub against the eye surface. This condition is not only a cosmetic concern but can also lead to serious eye problems. The continuous contact of the eyelashes with the cornea can cause corneal damage, clouding, and vision loss.
The only effective treatment for entropion is surgery. Preventing corneal damage is only possible by eliminating eyelash contact with the eye surface. Corrective surgical procedures (split techniques) are performed to reposition the eyelid outward.
Since both ectropion and entropion directly impact eye health, it is highly recommended that these surgeries be performed by an experienced oculoplastic surgeon.
What Are Eyelid Deformities?
Eyelid deformities include conditions where the eyelids either turn inward (entropion) or outward (ectropion), both of which require medical attention to protect eye health and improve cosmetic appearance.
