Ectropion is an eyelid deformity where the inner conjunctiva of the eyelid becomes exposed. Since the tear drainage openings (puncta) are also turned outward (everted), the patient experiences tear drainage issues. In severe cases, excessive tearing (epiphora) can occur, causing tears to flow down the face. In milder cases, the patient may appear to have constant watery eyes.
To relieve symptoms and improve cosmetic appearance, corrective surgical procedures are required. In some cases, skin or cartilage grafts may be necessary, especially when skin damage (such as burns) is present. These procedures effectively restore both tear drainage function and the patient’s overall appearance.
Inward Turning of the Eyelid / Entropion
Entropion occurs when the eyelid margin turns inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the eye surface. This condition can lead to serious eye problems beyond cosmetic concerns. The inward-facing eyelashes can damage the cornea, leading to corneal clouding and vision loss.
The only effective treatment for entropion is surgery. Preventing corneal damage is only possible by eliminating eyelash contact with the eye surface. Corrective surgical procedures are performed to reposition the eyelid margin outward.
Both ectropion and entropion directly affect eye health, making it essential for these surgical procedures to be performed by an experienced oculoplastic surgeon.
What Are Eyelid Deformities?
Eyelid deformities include inward-turning (entropion) and outward-turning (ectropion) conditions, both of which require medical attention to protect eye health and improve cosmetic appearance.
